lyrics

Steve used to play the rounds now he does sound and books the Westside Café
you know the guy grey hair blue eyes man you know I found out yesterday
e-mailed his list then he cut his own wrists how they found him in time isn't clear
hospital bound theyve bound him down for another round with his puppeteer

Just like the rest of us Steve stepped on the bus seeking fame and wealth
some say that Nashville broke his heart some say he broke himself
guess either way he could not make it pay and he stumbled home deep in arrears
shuffling around his own hometown try to make some peace with his puppeteer

Some people born without a thorn stuck in the side they got all the luck
Some have the mark of Cain stained in their DNA poisons all a touch
some find it helps to be losing themselves into family sport and career
some hang around and get their arse kicked to the ground by their puppeteer

Prozac and roids helped fill the void until it seemed he might be all right
so they let him out I heard he was getting about playing the open mics
I drop him a line sed i hoped Things were fine hey don't we catch up for a beer
hung up the phone and left the man sitting alone with his puppeteer

We all got our weights and we wrestle with fate find a way through the sorrows and fear
with tangled strings and broken wings from all the wars with our puppeteer
